Kakao T for Foreigners: How to Call a Taxi in Korea
If you’re planning a trip to Korea, Kakao T for foreigners may seem a little confusing at first—especially if you already use Uber in the United States.
The good news is that Kakao T is actually quite simple once you understand how the taxi and payment system works. On my recent trip to Korea, Uber worked well in major city areas, but I ended up using Kakao T almost exclusively because it usually found a taxi faster and was often less expensive.
What Is Kakao T?
For first-time visitors, Kakao T for foreigners is especially helpful because it makes calling a local taxi much easier, even if you don’t speak much Korean.
For travelers, its most useful feature is taxi booking.
Instead of standing beside the road trying to flag down an empty taxi, you can:
- Set your pickup location
- Enter your destination
- Check the estimated fare
- Request a nearby taxi
- See the assigned vehicle information
- Follow the taxi as it approaches
The app also makes the language barrier much easier to manage.
Because your destination is entered before the ride begins, you normally do not need to explain a complicated Korean address to the driver.
This is especially useful when you are going to a hotel, restaurant, café, train station, or attraction with a Korean name.
Set Up Kakao T Before You Need It
Download Kakao T from the Apple App Store or Google Play before your trip if possible.
Follow the registration instructions shown in the app and allow location access while using it.
The exact setup screens can change, so I recommend doing this when you have a stable internet connection rather than waiting until you are standing outside a station with luggage.
Once you are logged in, the most important thing is not to overcomplicate the payment process.
The Easiest Kakao T Payment Method for Foreigners
Foreign travelers sometimes get stuck trying to register a credit card inside Kakao T.
You can explore that option if you want, but you do not necessarily need it.
When direct payment is available, I recommend choosing direct payment.
That means Kakao T is mainly being used to call the taxi and send your destination to the driver.
When you arrive, you simply pay inside the taxi.
How direct payment works
- Enter your pickup location.
- Enter your destination.
- Choose your taxi option.
- Select direct payment if available.
- Request the taxi.
- Take your ride.
- Pay the driver with your international credit card when you arrive.
Most Korean taxis have card terminals, and Korea Tourism Organization’s official VISITKOREA transportation guidance notes that foreign-issued credit cards can be used in taxis. VISITKOREA Taxi Information
I still recommend carrying a backup card or some Korean won while traveling, but you do not need to make the payment setup harder than necessary.
Local Pro Tip
If direct payment is available, use it. Call the taxi through Kakao T and pay the driver with the international card you already use during your trip.
No Tipping Required
This is one cultural difference that American travelers usually appreciate.
Tipping is not expected in Korean taxis.
You simply pay the fare.
VISITKOREA also notes that tipping is not required for taxis in Korea.
That means no tip calculation and no extra screen asking whether you want to add 15%, 20%, or 25%.
Just pay the taxi fare and you’re done.
How to Call a Taxi with Kakao T
Once the app is ready, requesting a taxi is fairly straightforward.
Step 1: Choose Taxi
Open Kakao T and select the taxi service.
Your current location will usually appear automatically if location services are enabled.
Before requesting a ride, check the pickup location carefully.
Step 2: Check Your Pickup Point
This is one of the most important parts of using Kakao T.
Large Korean subway stations can have many exits spread across several blocks. If your driver is waiting near Exit 2 while you are standing near Exit 10 across a major road, finding each other can become difficult.
The same problem can happen around malls, hotels, markets, train stations, and large attractions.
Whenever possible, choose a place where the driver can easily stop, such as:
- A hotel entrance
- A clearly marked subway exit
- A quieter side street
- A recognizable building entrance
Avoid placing the pickup pin at a busy intersection or somewhere a taxi cannot safely stop.
If you’re unsure exactly where you are, Naver Map in Korea: A Guide for Foreign Travelers can help you identify station exits, smaller streets, and building entrances.
Step 3: Enter the Exact Destination
Search for the exact hotel, restaurant, attraction, or address.
Then check the location before confirming.
Many Korean cafés, restaurants, stores, and hotel chains have multiple branches, so make sure you are choosing the correct one.
For important destinations, I also recommend keeping the Korean name or address somewhere easy to find on your phone.
Step 4: Choose Your Taxi
Depending on your location, Kakao T may show several taxi options.
For most sightseeing trips, a standard taxi is enough.
Larger or premium vehicles can be useful if you are traveling with several people or carrying a lot of luggage, but you do not need to choose a more expensive option simply because you are a foreign visitor.
Check the taxi type and estimated fare before confirming.
Step 5: Request the Ride
After you select your payment method, request the taxi.
Once a driver accepts the ride, Kakao T will show the assigned vehicle information.
The most important detail is the license plate number.
There may be several taxis waiting near a station or hotel, so always match the plate number shown in the app before getting in.
Do You Need to Speak Korean?
Usually, very little.
That is one of the biggest advantages of using Kakao T.
Your destination is already entered in the app, so the driver normally knows where you are going before you get in.
Still, it is a good idea to keep your hotel’s Korean address or destination name on your phone.
A screenshot works well.
If anything is unclear, you can simply show the address to the driver.
When Should You Take a Taxi Instead of the Subway?
Korea’s public transportation system is excellent, especially in Seoul, so you do not need taxis for every trip.
How to Use the Seoul Subway: A Beginner’s Guide for Tourists
A taxi is especially useful when:
- You have heavy luggage
- You are traveling with children
- You are returning late at night
- Your destination is far from a subway station
- Several people can split the fare
- Public transportation requires several inconvenient transfers
- You are visiting an area outside the main tourist districts
For most travelers, the best strategy is to combine taxis and public transportation.
Use the subway for easy long-distance routes and Kakao T when door-to-door transportation makes more sense.

What About a Taxi from Incheon Airport?
A taxi from Incheon Airport can make sense if you have several large suitcases, young children, multiple travelers splitting the cost, or accommodation that is inconvenient to reach by train or airport bus.
But it is not automatically the best option.
Depending on your destination, AREX or an airport bus may be much less expensive.

Common Kakao T Mistakes to Avoid
Requesting a taxi before checking the pickup pin.
Make sure you are actually standing where the driver expects you to be.
Choosing the wrong branch of a business.
Always check the neighborhood and address.
Making the payment process harder than necessary.
If direct payment is available, select it and pay inside the taxi.
Assuming you need to tip.
Tipping is not expected in Korean taxis.
Depending only on Uber outside major city areas.
It may work perfectly well, but Kakao T usually gives you access to a wider local taxi network.
Using taxis for every trip.
Korea’s subway and bus systems are too useful to ignore.
So, Do You Really Need Kakao T in Korea?
Uber works in Korea, and in major city areas it can be very convenient.
But after trying both on my recent trip, I ended up using Kakao T most of the time.
For me, Kakao T usually found a taxi faster, Uber was often more expensive, and Kakao T gave me more confidence when traveling beyond the busiest parts of Seoul.
That is why I recommend downloading both if you already use Uber, but making Kakao T your main taxi app in Korea.
Choose direct payment when available, pay with your international credit card when you arrive, and remember that you do not need to tip.
Once you take your first Kakao T ride, the whole process feels much easier than it may seem at first.
