Naver Map in Korea: A Local’s Tips for First-Time Visitors

When I travel abroad, I use Google Maps. In Korea, I use Naver Map.

I find its walking directions easy to follow, its public transportation information helpful, and its restaurant listings convenient to browse. These are the things I need most when I’m out and about.

If you’re using Naver Map in Korea for the first time, you don’t need to learn every feature. Start with English settings, a route to your hotel, and one useful habit: checking the numbers in your directions.

Quick Summary: What Should You Know?

  • Naver Map supports English, including navigation.
  • I use it for walking directions, buses and subways, and restaurant information.
  • Check bus stop IDs, bus route numbers, and subway exit numbers carefully.
  • If an English place search is unclear, try the Korean name or full address.

Why Do I Use Naver Map in Korea?

Among the people around me, Naver Map and KakaoMap are the usual choices for getting around. Naver Map is familiar across generations, including older adults.

For me, its biggest advantage is how easily I can move from finding a place to planning the journey there.

Walking: I find the directions easy to follow, especially between a subway station and a restaurant or hotel.

Public transportation: I can check a journey’s steps, including where to board, transfer, and get off.

Restaurants: I can look through photos, reviews, and business details while deciding where to eat.

That’s why it’s my first choice in Korea. If you’ve already saved places in Google Maps, keep your list—you can look up those same destinations in Naver Map when planning your day.

Can You Use Naver Map in English?

Yes. To change the language, open MY, tap the settings gear, and select Language. On iPhone, this may take you to your phone’s settings.

Once you’ve switched to English, search for your hotel and compare the address with your booking. Then preview a route to somewhere you plan to visit.

English support doesn’t mean every menu photo or piece of business information will be translated. If a search doesn’t find the right place, copy its Korean name or address from your booking confirmation or the business’s website.

Always check the branch, too. A familiar business name can appear at more than one location.

How Do You Follow a Bus or Subway Route?

Search for your destination, open directions, and select public transportation. Before choosing a route, check the walking time and number of transfers as well as the total journey time.

Then read the journey one step at a time:

  1. Find the station or bus stop where you’ll board.
  2. Check the bus route or subway line and direction.
  3. Note where you’ll transfer or get off.
  4. Check the final walk to your destination.

Naver provides transit guidance and bus arrival information where supported. Arrival times are estimates, so check them again as you travel.

Local Pro Tip: Use the Numbers to Avoid Confusion

One of my most useful tips for taking buses in Korea is to check the bus stop’s ID number, not just its name.

Nearby stops can have similar names. Stops on opposite sides of the road may also serve different directions. The stop ID helps you confirm exactly where to wait.

Open the boarding stop in your Naver Map route and look for its ID. When you reach the stop, compare that number with the one on the sign. You can also look up bus information using a stop number.

Keep these numbers separate:

NumberWhat to check
Bus stop IDAm I waiting at the correct stop?
Bus route numberIs this the bus I need to board?
Subway exit numberAm I leaving through the exit shown in my route?

The stop ID tells you where to wait. The bus route number tells you which bus to take. Check the direction as well before boarding.

For the subway, pay attention to the exit number before heading upstairs. If your route says Exit 3, follow the station signs for Exit 3. Another exit may leave you on a different street and add an unnecessary walk.

When the place names feel unfamiliar, these numbers give you something simple to match between your phone and the signs around you.

What Should You Check Before Visiting a Restaurant?

I like Naver Map because I can get a quick sense of a restaurant in one place. Before going, I check the food photos, recent reviews, opening hours, and exact location.

Look for any listed break time or last-order time, too. If you’re making a special trip, confirm important details with the restaurant because business information can change.

For restaurants inside larger buildings, check the floor and entrance information. Finding the right building doesn’t always mean you’ve found the restaurant’s door.

Start With One Simple Route

Before your trip, set Naver Map to English and practice looking up your hotel. During your trip, take a moment to check the stop ID, bus number, or subway exit whenever you’re unsure.

You don’t have to memorize Korean place names to start finding your way around. Learn the next step of your route, match the signs, and go from there.
